During small group in Mrs. Zawicki's Head Start classroom, preschool students learned basic measurement terms and explored the tools used to measure with dinosaurs. Children gradually learn how to measure correctly by using the same unit, starting at the baseline, and not leaving gaps or overlaps while measuring. We talked with children about the measurable attributes they identify. Teachers ask questions like "I wonder which one is bigger?" and encourage them to explain how they reached their conclusion. Students also learned to use comparison to describe scale. As an example, put two dinosaur feet next to each to see which is bigger. "Look yours is bigger and mine is smaller."
