pi day

Mrs. Guerra, Ms. Jones, and Mrs. Butcher celebrated Pi Day on 3.14.2024 at Ferndale Middle School. Pi has uses in physics, astronomy, and mathematics. Pi is also used in architecture and construction. It has been a vital part of everything from arches and bridges to the Pyramids of Giza. Students participated in many activities including Pi Measuring, Pi Riddles, Pi Coloring, Pi Puzzles, Pi Trivia, Pi picture books, Pi Memorization, and of course…. Pi(e) Eating! Albert Einstein even made an appearance (he was born on March 14th)! Here are some interesting facts about pi:

  • Pi is represented by a Greek letter that is an abbreviation for the Greek word perimeter. Pi represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter

  • Pi's digits following the decimal point are random and non-repeating

  • Pi is used to determine your head/hat size

  • Rajveer Meena at VIT University (Vellore, India) memorized 70,000 digits of pi (March 2015)

Lots of learning fun was had by all. A special thanks goes to all the families that donated yummy treats and volunteered to help make this fun day happen. Our math teachers love nerdy jokes, so here’s a favorite about pi:

What do you call a young student who loves math and wants to know more about the number pi? An as-pi-ring mathematician!
