The University of Olivet graciously chartered a coach bus to welcome our students and showcase their beautiful campus, creating an unforgettable experience that emphasized inclusivity and collaboration among all three Ferndale high schools. Students from Ferndale High School (FHS), University High School (UHS), and Tri-County Educational Center (TCEC) came together as one family for the Beyond the Bell: College & Career Discovery trip.
The day began with excitement as students and parents arrived as early as 6:50 AM to ensure a timely 7:15 AM departure. From a guided campus tour to an engaging Q&A session with university deans, a delicious lunch in the dining hall, and even karaoke on the bus ride home, every moment was packed with inspiration and learning.
For many of the 50 students who participated, this trip marked their first time visiting a college campus. Unlike traditional college visits that often require specific GPAs, this opportunity welcomed all students, regardless of academic standing, making the dream of higher education feel more accessible and attainable.
Students asked insightful questions and explored the wealth of resources available to support their success. The University of Olivet showcased its dedication to student achievement by highlighting initiatives such as covering a fifth year of tuition if additional classes are needed and guaranteeing internships through personal connections with community professionals.
This inclusive experience served as a powerful reminder for students to take ownership of their high school journey and recognize that their future starts now—not after graduation.
Here’s what our students had to say about the experience:
“The best part of the trip was learning that the University of Olivet will pay for your fifth year if you need extra classes to graduate.” — Keyanna (FHS)
“I loved that Olivet accepts students with lower GPAs, and these students will still qualify for scholarship money.” — Cassidy (UHS)
“They have personal relationships with professionals in the community, guaranteeing internships with people they know personally.” — Raylen (TCEC)
“I enjoyed being in a different city that was actually rural. I had never seen that area before. The campus was beautiful.” — Breunna (FHS)
“I like that they have people to support you with your accommodations so you can be successful in college.” — Kori (FHS)
This collaboration between FHS, UHS, and TCEC demonstrated the power of unity, proving that when we work together, every student has the opportunity to thrive, dream big, and explore their future possibilities.
We are proud of our students for stepping out of their comfort zones and embracing this valuable opportunity!
