Heading to Houston for the World Championship in April
Against 71 formidable teams from across southeast Michigan competing at the state robotics championship, Ferndale Middle School’s Giggle Pickles team took the crown! The team went undefeated in 12 matches—including a best 2 of 3 finals showdown—to win the championship at the Michigan FTC State Championship-SE held at Macomb Community College on Dec. 7-8.
The team showed incredible poise throughout the competition, overcoming several challenges on the way to grabbing the title, including one match that saw the Giggle Pickles’ robot lose power midway through the match, only to come back on line with enough time to score a win.
The season-long instruction and nurturing of mentors Nick Kokotovich, Mike Radowiec and Ian Siple really shone as the kids not only performed amazingly in competition, but maintained their focus throughout the long weekend, comported themselves well, and best of all, had a great time!
In addition to winning the championship, the Giggle Pickles’ lead mentor, Nick Kokotovich, won the Compass Award, based on a video (secretly) made and submitted by the kids. The award was given in recognition of “an adult coach or mentor who has given outstanding guidance and support to a team throughout the year.”

The team’s attention now turns to fundraising as it will take a lot to get the entire Giggle Pickles family to Houston for the World Championship in April. But the kids are eager to put in the work necessary. Let’s go, Pickles!
The Ferndale School Community is beaming with pride at the outstanding achievement of the Giggle Pickles Team. We wholeheartedly support them as they proudly represent our district on the grand stage in Houston. Go Eagles!
